Mining Memories Museum of Cannock Chase
Opened March 2014
Situated on the site of the former Valley Colliery – a training pit for young miners and also for the Mines Rescue service – the Mining Memories tells the story of the area including its social, industrial and domestic history.
The aim of the project is to replace the existing coal-mining gallery with new, high-quality displays that tell the story of the people involved, relate the site of the museum to the former colliery and provide a comprehensive and clear explanation of how coal was formed, extracted and used.
An underground immersive zone with both authentic and replica handling objects was a particular area of focus for the miners. A cage lift which brings miners down the mine shaft is a vivid memory for many, so RFA crated a reconstruction which trembles as it ‘descends’, with voice actors portraying a first-timer and a veteran in a script developed by the volunteers.
