Lowther Castle Galleries, Cumbria
Following extensive restoration works, the ruins of Lowther Castle, its massive stables and 20 hidden gardens have recently opened to the public for the first time in 400 years.
For years the significance and potential of the castle and gardens had been recognised, but the castle had deteriorated and since 1999 had been on English Heritage’s register of buildings most ‘at risk’.
The Lowther Collection, consisting of 600 items including silver and gold, pictures, furniture and porcelain associated with the Earls of Lonsdale, will be housed in a new suite of galleries situated in the stable block. RFA is appointed to design and build the new displays, which will form an essential part of the visitor experience.
